Endoplasmic Reticulum

2 comments:

  1. As demonstrated well in this poster, the Endoplasmic Reticulum is composed of two types.
    1. Rough endoplasmic reticulum &
    2. Smooth endoplasmic reticulum.
The endoplasmic reticulum (ER)extends from the nuclear envelope and makes up more than half of the surface within the cytoplasm.

RER is responsible of protein synthesis and is studded with ribosomes that have been passed by the nucleus to undergo processing and sorting prior to leaving towards the golgi complex.
Smooth ER on the other hand extends from the RER and is not responsible for protein synthesis as it lacks the presence of ribosomes. Smooth ER is responsible for synthesizing fatty acids and steroids as it contains unique enzymes. These unique enzymes are the ones that help detoxify the liver form certain drugs or alcohol.
